It’s bad enough to have to put up with acne, let alone have to deal with the scars left behind afterwards. However, there are many people, both teenagers and adults, who have acne scars and they have no idea how to treat them. While there aren’t a lot of options available, some are more effective than others are.
Surgical Procedures
Some dermatologists are using laser surgery to help get rid of acne scars. There are many drawbacks to this type of procedure. There is a chance of additional scarring, infection, and permanent redness or irritation. It’s also a very expensive procedure and it’s not usually covered by insurance. You also will need to find a specialist in this type of outpatient procedure. For many people, this is simply not a good option to get rid of acne scars.
Prescription Medications
While there are many available that claim to get rid of acne, the truth is there are few prescription medications that can reduce the appearance of acne scars. These are generally available in the form of a cream or lotion. There are many warnings on the packages, such as Retinonic, that list side effect of redness, irritation, itching or burning. Unfortunately, these types of medications must be used for months before any significant difference is noticed. In many cases, people never see the results they are hoping for.
Over the Counter Creams and Lotions
There are also a number of products in your local pharmacy that proclaim they will get rid of acne scars. However, these products are designed to help the body regenerate skin cells and increase collagen production. Do these topical products work? Yes, to a certain extent. There are products available that will help the skin appear firmer and plumper, but the scars are still there. Once the treatment is stopped, the skin returns to its former condition and the scars are still very visible.
Cosmetic Procedures
Chemical peels are often used to try to remove acne scars. There are a number of risks for this type of procedure, too. Many people are not able to return to work for several days because of the redness and irritation. It’s quite a painful procedure and it’s not always guaranteed to work. You will also shell out a ton of money for the procedure, too.

While it may seem like there is nothing you can do to help get rid of acne scars, your best bet it to speak with your dermatologist to decide which treatment will work best for you. Many of these products will react differently based upon your skin type, coloring, and your age. Seeking professional help is your best bet.
