A chemical peel is one of the best ways to get rid of acne scars. The popularity of chemical peels has increased, as they are more affordable today and more effective for treating outbreaks of acne. Chemical peels can specially improve small and depressed scars and some larger scars.
Chemical peeling can be considered a procedure for facial skin rejuvenation. The process of chemical peeling consists of the application of a chemical solution to the skin causing the skin to blister and peel off over a period of a few days. When the skin peels off, new skin replaces it.
If you want to treat acne by removing blackheads and whiteheads, chemical peeling can also be used. Unfortunately ice-pick scars and deep fibriotic scars cannot be treated effectively by this method. If there is deep or extensive scarring, deep and repeated peels may be necessary.
The technology of chemical peeling is very delicate and should only be handled by well trained professionals. If the chemical peel is left on too long, it can cause serious damage to the face. It should affect only the top layer of the skin, which is removed by the peeling giving way to a new layer of youthful, bright and lively skin.
Before you use a chemical peel for removing acne and acne scars, you should consult a certified cosmetic surgeon to find out whether your skin is suitable for a chemical peel for acne scar removal. Actually, only superficial acne can be cured by this method. People having severe acne where zits have formed deep underneath the skin and have deep scar tissue cannot respond to the treatment of chemical peeling.
There are two mild forms of acne chemical peels which are betahydroxy acids and alphahydroxy acids. The chemical peel treatment with them can show quick recovery of the skin, though initially there may be redness, irritation and even crusting on the skin. But the body adjusts very quickly to the burning caused by the peels. It is also possible to repeat this milder treatment every six weeks, so that you can have a complete acne and acne scar free skin.
Milder versions of chemical peels are easily available over the counter, and when applied they simply lift away the dead upper layers of the skin. Nevertheless, a chemical solution is the basis for these peels, but they are mild and rarely have side effects. It may take longer than a professional peel to have any effect, but they are easy to use, affordable and can be applied comfortably at home, instead of visiting a dermatologist.
Stronger peels for acne are also available which get deeper into the skin and may provide longer benefit. These are phenol treatments and trichloroacetic acid. But there may be some side effects and could bring more harm to your skin than a cure. So be careful when you use any kind of chemical peel, and consult a doctor before you start any kind of treatment.
